AVID Teacher

AVID (Advanced via Individual Determination) is an acronym representing a system of research-based strategies enveloped into the core curriculum to increase rigor, relationships, and relevance. An AVID Elective teacher is a skilled educator, who thrives in relationship building and preparing students in the academic middle for four and two-year colleges, as well as career entry. The AVID elective curriculum is guided by the principles of WICOR; Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. Because AVID elective students also enroll in at least one rigorous course including honors or AP, the AVID elective teacher is responsible for supporting students’ academic success across content areas.
Requirements:
- Hold or be eligible for licensure in Virginia with elementary endorsement
- Must have passing score on the Praxis II assessment
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in creating a student recruitment plan.
- Facilitate the recruitment process including applications, student interviews, etc.
- Facilitate communication with students, parents, and teachers regarding the AVID schoolwide plan and AVID elective class.
- Coordinates with the school principal a schedule to accommodate identified students in the program.
- Be knowledgeable about AVID objectives and grade level curriculum.
- Participate in on-going AVID staff development/curriculum articulation training.
- Supervise/coach tutors in classroom.
- Provide on-going modeling for tutors regarding the use of higher level questions and ways to push students' thinking.
- Model effective instructional strategies for teachers by working weekly with students in whole and small groups, or individually.
- Maintains required data on individual student progress and shares data as required by AVID memorandum of agreement.
- Participate in the data analysis process to make program improvements.
- Participate in the review of the AVID Site Plan.
- Assist District Director in writing AVID Site Team Plan.
- Share AVID methodologies with colleagues.
- Model AVID methodologies for other colleagues.
- Coordinate college visits and college and career readiness activities for the AVID elective class.
- Attend site team meetings.
- Help lead and support AVID site leadership team.
- Coordinate with District Director and Principal to advance AVID initiatives.
- Performs such additional duties of AVID Elective Teacher as assigned.
